zlib is a data compression library written in C. Its authors are Jean-Loup Gailly and Mark Adler. The first public version, 0.9, was released on May 1, 1995, and it was originally designed for use with the libpng image library. It is licensed under the zlib license, and the current latest stable version is 1.2.5, released on April 19, 2010.
As of March 2007, it is included in Coverity (Coverity Coverity)'s experimental open-source project supported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and it is used in many fields, including as an abstraction layer for the DEFLATE compression algorithm used by the gzip file compression program.
