The file system was first introduced in SOLARIS10 in 2005 to replace the existing Unix file system. It was the first file system to adopt a 128-bit design, providing nearly unlimited capacity, and its distinguishing feature is that it includes volume manager functionality in the file system itself, so the hard disks in a system can be configured or combined into a storage pool.
