Yum, short for Yellow dog Updater, Modified, is an automatic updater and package install/remove tool for RPM-based systems. It was developed as part of the Linux@DUKE project at Duke University. There are also GUI-based extension tools such as yumex. It replaces the Yellowdog Updater (YUP) tool that preceded Yum, and it emerged to manage the Red Hat Linux systems used in the Department of Physics at Duke University. Since then it has been used in many RPM-based Linux distributions such as Fedora and CentOS. Red Hat's package manager up2date can also access Yum repositories.
