Xvid (formerly XviD; Korean: jebideu) is a video codec library that follows the MPEG-4 standard. Xvid supports MPEG-4 ASP features such as b-frames, global and quarter-pixel motion compensation, lumi masking, and trellis quantization. It also supports H.263, MPEG, and custom quantization matrices.

Xvid is the first competing codec to DivX (Xvid is DivX spelled backwards). While DivX is commercial software, Xvid is free/open-source software, and in contrast to DivX, which supports only Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, Xvid can be used on a variety of platforms and operating systems.
