Xfce

lastmod 2019-10-24created 2015-05-2612 edits

Xfce is a free software desktop environment for Unix and Unix-like platforms (such as GNU/Linux, Solaris, and BSD). While it is also visually appealing and easy to use, its goal is to be fast and lightweight.

The current version, 4.4, embodies the traditional Unix philosophy of modularity and reusability. It consists of separately packaged components that together fully provide the functions of a desktop environment, while letting users build the personal working environment they prefer. Xfce is mainly used for modern desktop environments, or else to run relatively the most modern hardware.

Xfce 4 has as its top priority following standards, especially those defined by the freedesktop.org project.

Like GNOME, it is based on the GTK+ 2.x toolkit. It uses the Xfwm window manager. Its configuration can be done entirely with the mouse, and configuration files are hidden from the user.

Xfce is somewhat similar to the commercial CDE, but there are some differences compared with the newer versions. (Overall, it has been completely reprogrammed about twice: from version 2 to version 3, and again in version 4.)

History

Olivier Fourdan started the project in 1996. The name "Xfce" originally stood for XForms Common Environment, but it is no longer written XFCE but Xfce. The current Xfce developers say the acronym XFCE does not stand for anything in particular.
