XML-RPC

ML-RPC is a type of RPC protocol that adopts XML as its encoding format and uses the HTTP protocol as its transport. XML-RPC is a very simple specification, used only to define small data formats and commands, and its specification is fairly simple at about two A4 pages. This is a notable feature compared with most RPC protocol systems, which define numerous standards and demand an enormous amount of coding in actual use.

This protocol was developed in 1998 by Dave Winer's UserLand Software Ltd. jointly with Microsoft. Later, the SOAP protocol, which adds more features to this protocol, was developed, but XML-RPC, being simpler and easier to use than SOAP, is generally used more.

A similar RPC-family protocol is the JSON-RPC protocol.
