A world model, or world foundation model, is a type of foundation model built to understand and simulate the physical laws, space, time, and interactions of the real world, going beyond text and images.

For example, rather than simply recognizing an image of a 'cat', it aims to predict changes in the world based on cause and effect, such as 'how will the ball move if the cat rolls it' or 'what happens if a glass is dropped'. It is regarded as a key technology for AI to move beyond merely recognizing and generating data and develop into intelligent agents that reason and act within virtual environments resembling the real world.

It is also a concept that Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun has particularly championed and stressed the importance of. Yann LeCun argues that for future AGI to reach human-level intelligence, it must have an internal model of the world.
