Checking for file corruption in the Windows component store

Describes how to use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to resolve missing or corrupted system files in Windows 8.

If Windows Resource Protection (WRP) files are missing or corrupted, Windows may not work correctly. For example, some Windows functions may not work, or Windows may crash. The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing and corrupted system files and repairs them.

Checking the Windows component store for file corruption

  1. Press [Windows logo key+X], then click "Command Prompt (Admin)".
  2. Type the command below and press Enter. (If typing is difficult, copy the command, right-click in the Command Prompt, and click "Paste".)
  3. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  4. Depending on the PC, it may take a long time to complete.
  5. Then try a system scan with the following command.
  6. sfc /scannow
  7. It searches for problems in system files and repairs whatever can be repaired.
  8. When the scan reaches 100%, check the result message.

Troubleshooting

BOOTMGR is missing

However, because the boot loader is gone and Windows RE cannot be loaded, you have to boot from Windows installation media. Then, to fix this problem, run the Command Prompt and

:: MBR 영역 재구성
bootrec /fixmbr
:: 부팅 영역 재구성
bootrec /fixboot
:: OS 스캔 (?)
bootrec /scanos
:: BCD 재빌드
bootrec /rebuildbcd

enter these in order. Note that the bootrec command exists only in Windows RE, so use RE. Running Startup Repair at the same time is even better.
