WinDbg

WinDbg is a multipurpose debugger for Microsoft Windows. Debugging is the process of finding and analyzing errors in a system, and it also includes exploring the internal workings of software as an aid to development. It can be used to debug user-mode applications, device drivers, and the operating system itself in kernel mode. Like the Visual Studio debugger, it has a graphical user interface (GUI), but it is more powerful.

WinDbg can be used to debug kernel-mode memory dumps created after the blue screen that occurs on a bug check. It can also be used to debug user-mode crash dumps, which is known as post-mortem debugging.

WinDbg can automatically load debug symbol files (e.g. PDB) from a server via SymSrv (SymSrv.dll), matched by various criteria (e.g. timestamp, CRC, processor version), instead of the more time-consuming task of building a symbol tree. When a private symbol server is configured, the symbols are associated with the source code. By removing the need to find and install specific symbol versions on the debug host, it eases the burden of debugging problems caused by the various versions of binaries installed on the debugging target. Microsoft runs a public symbol server that has most of the public symbols for Windows 2000 and later versions, including service packs.

When AI meets WinDBG

  • When AI meets WinDBG: The future of crash analysis in 2025 | GeekNews
  • An open-source project that transforms traditional WinDBG-centered crash analysis with AI and a natural language interface
  • Through integration with GitHub Copilot, simple conversational queries are enough to identify the cause of a crash and even fix it automatically
  • Builds an architecture in which AI runs and interprets WinDBG commands via MCP
  • AI can also assist with advanced tasks such as automatically analyzing many crash dumps, interpreting stack traces, and debugging pointers
  • This approach can transform the workflows of QA, support, and engineers alike; the view is that debugging has now entered the 'vibe coding' era too
