A wide area network (WAN) is a network that connects large areas such as countries or continents. It is also called a long-haul network, and the term contrasts with local area network.

It includes backbone networks connecting distant regions, and today it can also broadly refer to private or leased networks, including public networks.

WAN connection technology options

  • Leased line: Most secure but expensive. Used for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), HDLC, SDLC, and HNAS protocols.
  • Circuit switching: Inexpensive, but requires going through a telephone call setup. Used for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and ISDN protocols.
  • Packet switching: Used for X.25 frame relay protocols.
  • Cell relay: Best for carrying data and voice simultaneously, but overhead is expected. Used in ATM.
