A hotspot is a physical location where people can access the Internet through a wireless LAN (WLAN) using Wi-Fi technology, typically using a router connected to an Internet service provider.

Public hotspots can be created by businesses, such as cafés or hotels, for customers to use. Public hotspots are typically made from wireless access points configured to provide Internet access controlled to some degree by the venue. In its simplest form, a venue with broadband Internet access can create public wireless access by configuring an access point (AP) together with a router. A single wireless router combining these functions may be sufficient.

A personal hotspot, often called tethering, can be configured on a smartphone or tablet with a network data plan so that other devices can access the Internet via a password, Bluetooth pairing, or the moeex protocol over USB, and this works even when the hotspot device and the devices connecting to it are on the same Wi-Fi network but that network does not provide Internet access. Similarly, Bluetooth or USB On-The-Go can be used on a mobile device to provide Internet access over Wi-Fi instead of the mobile network; this applies to devices without Wi-Fi or mobile network capability passwords.

How to enable a hotspot on Ubuntu

A Wi-Fi hotspot lets you share your Internet connection by creating a Wi-Fi network that others can connect to. To do this, you must be connected to the Internet through a route other than Wi-Fi. Turning on the hotspot disconnects that interface, and Internet access over Wi-Fi becomes unavailable.
