Web standards is a general term for the formal standards and other technical specifications that describe and define aspects of the World Wide Web. Recently, the term has become increasingly important in building websites and is related to web design and development.

Among the many interdependent standards and specifications, some do not concern the World Wide Web alone but also aspects of Internet governance, and these standards directly or indirectly affect the development and administration of websites and web services. All of these are called "web standards," but people who advocate moving to web standards tend to focus on higher-level standards that directly affect usability and accessibility. Web standards in the broader sense consist of the following:

  • W3C (World Wide Web Consortium)
  • Internet Standard (STD) documents published by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
  • RFC (Request for Comments) documents published by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
  • Standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • Standards published by Ecma International (formerly ECMA)
  • The Unicode Standard and various Unicode Technical Reports (UTR) published by the Unicode Consortium
  • Name and number registries maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
