A web search engine is a program for searching websites. Some search engines include file search results from FTP servers or websites, and there are also web search engines specialized for images, torrent files, or particular kinds of websites.
Web search engines are usually available as web services. On the server side, a special program called a 'robot' crawls websites and automatically collects information about them in advance. Then, when you enter a search term on the search engine site, you can see the matching results from the information the search engine has collected. Many portal sites provide this kind of web search service. A portal site's search results page sometimes also shows results from a web directory, a collection of websites curated by people. Early search engines were based on web directories, but these days web directories tend not to be called search engines.
Web search engines are originally an extension of methods for searching files on a computer or internal databases of companies and organizations. However, since the web is hypertext-based and combines documents with images, videos, and so on, the quality of search is determined by how the robot analyzes references and vocabulary.
