A layout engine or rendering engine is software that takes web content (HTML, XML, image files, etc.) and formatting information (CSS, XML, etc.) and displays the formatted content on the screen. This program paints the content area of a window to be shown on a monitor or printer. Layout engines are used in applications that display or edit web content, such as web browsers and email clients.
