The Web Server Gateway Interface (WSGI) is a Python framework for interfacing between web servers and web applications.
WSGI was originally specified as PEP-333 in 2003. PEP-3333, published in 2010, updates the specification for Python 3.
Overview
Earlier Python web application frameworks were constrained in their choice of web server. They were usually designed to use only one of the custom APIs such as CGI, FastCGI, or mod_python. WSGI, by contrast, was built at a low level and broke down the walls between web servers, web applications, and frameworks.
