From a software engineering perspective, a web application or web app is application software that can be used in a web browser over the internet or an intranet.
Web applications are popular because many people use web browsers as clients. One of their advantages is that a web application can be maintained without having to distribute and install software on tens of millions of PCs. Web applications can implement a wide range of functions, such as webmail, online e-commerce and auctions, wikis, internet forums, blogs, and MMORPG games.
