WebMCP is a proposed standard designed to let websites expose structured tools directly to in-browser AI agents
About
- Instead of traditional screen scraping or DOM inference, the website itself provides "what can be done on this page" — its functions and inputs/outputs — in the form of an explicit contract
- Supports everything from HTML form-based tasks to complex JavaScript interactions through a declarative API and an imperative API
- A contract structure in which agents discover the page's tools (Discovery), inputs and outputs are specified with JSON Schema, and the current page state (State) is shared
- Included as an early preview in Chrome version 146. Trying it early requires joining the Chrome built-in AI Early Preview Program
- Differs in that the existing MCP is a server-side protocol, whereas WebMCP is a protocol for client-side, in-browser AI agents
