WebM is a royalty-free, open, high-quality compressed video format used with HTML5 video. It was first released on May 19, 2010, and the project is developed with sponsorship from Google.
A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams and is based on a profile of Matroska.
The project releases WebM-related software under a BSD license, and all users can use it free of charge.
Support
At Google I/O it was announced that Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome would support it. Internet Explorer 9 supports WebM files if the VP8 codec is installed, and Safari can get support through codecs installed in QuickTime (codec components such as Perian). Epiphany also supports it through the GStreamer multimedia framework.
YouTube supports WebM while trialing its HTML5 player. Logitech supports WebM as part of its video call service.
