Visual effects (visual F/X, VFX) is a term used for creating and processing pictures or film frames through compositing. Special effects are usually used together when integrating live-action footage with CGI and the like, in cases where an environment that looks real must be created but would be dangerous, costly, or impossible to film.
They are widely used in big-budget films, and with the recent spread of animation and compositing software, the way has opened for even amateur filmmakers to use visual effects.
