Varnish is an HTTP accelerator designed for content-heavy dynamic websites and APIs. Unlike other web accelerators such as Squid, which began as a client-side cache, or Nginx and Apache, which are mainly origin servers, Varnish was designed as an HTTP accelerator. Unlike other proxy servers that support FTP, SMTP, and other network protocols, Varnish is specialized for HTTP only.
