VP8 is one of the video codecs of On2 Technologies, which was acquired by Google.
Overview
On May 19, 2010, at Google I/O, it was made open-source software under a modified BSD-style license to address patent issues, and then released as open source together with WebM, Google's own format based on Matroska. Compatibility issues between this license and the GPL were pointed out, but they were resolved after the license was changed to remove the patent clause. Xiph.Org cooperates in the development.
Google announced that it would convert all videos on YouTube to WebM. Mozilla also announced WebM support in Firefox, and Adobe Systems announced that the next release of Adobe Flash would support VP8.
Google also developed and released WebP, a still image format using VP8 technology.
VP9
VP9 is an open and royalty free video coding format being developed by Google. VP9 had earlier development names of Next Gen Open Video (NGOV) and VP-Next. VP9 is a successor to VP8. Chromium, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera support playing VP9 video format in the HTML5 video tag.
