A Unix-like operating system is an operating system with a structure similar to a Unix system. It is also called *nix. Being Unix-like does not require following the Single UNIX Specification or obtaining related certification.
The term may also include free software / open-source operating systems designed to emulate the features devised by Bell Labs' Unix, as well as versions based on licensed Unix source code. No standard for the term has been officially defined, and there may be some disagreement over whether a given operating system is Unix-like or not.
