(For the shell interface for the GNOME desktop environment, see Unity.)

Unity is a game engine that provides a development environment for 3D and 2D video games, and an integrated authoring tool for creating interactive content such as 3D animation, architectural visualization, and virtual reality (VR).

Unity can also produce content for 27 platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and web browsers (WebGL), and its authoring tool, the Unity Editor, supports Windows and macOS.

Unity was first unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2005 as a game engine for Apple OSX. As of 2016, it was the most popular game engine, holding 45% of the global game engine market, with over 5 million registered developers.

The engine itself includes middleware such as light mapping and a physics engine, and assets with various features can be downloaded and used through the Asset Store built into the editor.

It is distributed in three editions, Personal, Plus, and Pro, and individuals can use the Personal edition for free. There is an official original character called Unity-chan, provided by Unity Technology Japan. It is distributed for free under its terms of use so that developers using the Unity game engine can freely set up the character.
