Uber (English: Uber Technologies, Inc.) is an American smartphone-based ride-sharing service.
Uber's service effectively began in 2010. The company provides a service that brokers between passengers and drivers of hired or shared vehicles through a mobile app. It currently operates in many cities around the world. As of June 2014, it was in service in more than 100 cities. Vehicles are booked through text messages or the mobile app, and the mobile app shows passengers the location of the booked vehicle in real time.
Initially it offered vehicles such as the Lincoln Town Car, Cadillac Escalade, BMW 7 Series Mercedes-Benz S550 sedan. Since 2012 it has offered UberX (English: UberX), giving a wider choice of vehicles than before, including cheaper models, to serve a broader market. As of 2014, it varies slightly by city, but it basically offers BLACK (the original UBER), X, TAXI, LUXURY, and so on. In 2012, Uber announced plans to add shared transportation using non-taxi vehicles.
As of 2014, Uber's valuation exceeded 18 trillion won, surpassing Airbnb and Xiaomi. Uber's current valuation is estimated at 68 billion dollars (about 75.3 trillion won), the highest among startups worldwide.
