Typography refers to the arrangement of type, and in particular to two-dimensional expression centered on characters or typographic symbols. It is also a term for printing with movable type. Today its meaning has shifted: it sometimes refers to the whole of compositional graphic design, even including photographs, and is used almost as a synonym for design in general. In other words, in the field of editorial design, it is the term for composing and expressing typefaces, character placement, and the like.

Styles from before the invention of Western letterpress printing are still carried on today, but modern typography centered on the Bauhaus broke away from old forms through constructivist creation and gradually adopted functional expression, becoming a field of design. There are also classical techniques centered on bookmaking, as well as the organic, fluid American typography, among others.

Typography is the technique and art of arranging type, designing type, and modifying glyphs. Glyphs are created and modified with various illustration techniques. Arranging type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line spacing, adjusting the space between sentences, and adjusting the space between words.

Typography is practiced by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, and scribes. Until the digital age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened a new era of typography for visual designers and designers.
