Apache Tomcat is a web application server developed by the Apache Software Foundation that has only a servlet container (or web container).

Tomcat provides a Java environment that can run in integration with a web server, providing an environment in which JavaServer Pages (JSP) and Java servlets can run. Tomcat's configuration can be changed through management tools, but it can also be configured by editing XML files. Tomcat also has its own built-in HTTP server.

Apache Tomcat is open-source software adopting the Apache Licence, Version 2. It provides a servlet container for running servlets and JSP, and is often used as the servlet container in commercial web application servers as well. Version 5.5 and later support Java SE 5.0 and later by default.

Integration with web servers

A web system can be built with only the web server built into Apache Tomcat, but to build a system used by a large number of users, you need to build a stable system integrated with a web server. In that case, integration with the Apache web server is done using an integration module: versions 1.3 and 2.0 use mod_jk, and version 2.2 and later use the mod_proxy_ajp module.
