A Rust port of tmux
About
- The tmux-rs project ported the entire tmux codebase, written in C, to Rust over about six months
- An automatic conversion was first attempted with the C2Rust tool, but the output was hard to maintain, so the conversion was ultimately done by hand
- Ran into a number of bugs and structural problems in the build process and in Rust-C interop
- Porting C-specific patterns such as goto statements, macro data structures, and the yacc parser to Rust raised particular issues that needed their own solutions
- The project is still based on unsafe Rust, but aims for a complete port to Rust through precompilation and test runs
