A thumbnail (North Korean standard language: saengnyakdo, "abbreviated picture") is a reduced-size version of a picture that makes pictures easy to recognize while browsing them, and treats pictures the same way as an ordinary text index. The Vista search engine and picture management programs commonly use this approach, as do modern operating systems and desktop environments such as Windows XP, KDE, and GNOME.
Thumbnails also help with quick understanding and indexing of movies and various guides.
An automatic thumbnail feature converts a larger picture to a smaller size, and the result does not speak to the quality of the thumbnail.
People whose web design skills are not high, when reducing the size of a large picture, simply use HTML encoding instead of using a smaller (lower-resolution) picture. HTML encoding does not actually reduce the size of such a picture; it only displays it resized, and the visual quality of browser resizing is not as good as expected. For this reason, rather than using HTML encoding, it is recommended to reduce the picture size directly with a separate program. Reducing the picture size directly reduces network traffic problems and cuts users' web page download times.
In the Korean version of Windows Vista, the thumbnail feature is translated as "chang miribogi" (window preview) or "chuksopan" (miniature). In practice, while using Windows Aero, simply pointing the mouse cursor at a program on the taskbar shows the full-size window as a small thumbnail.
