Tex (pronounced "tek") is a typesetting program created by Donald Knuth.
Tex was developed with two goals: to produce beautiful documents with minimal effort, and to produce identical output regardless of the computer model. So the extension of documents compiled with Tex is .dvi, which stands for device independent format. These are converted to get document files such as PDF and PostScript.
Because TeX is hard to use directly, today documents are often created using LateX.

LaTex
LaTeX is a program used for document typesetting. It is a set of macros created by Leslie Lamport in 1984 to make TeX, created by Donald Knuth, easier to use. Because TeX is hard to use directly, today documents are often created using LaTeX.
TeX Software
The following is a list of software that can use TeX.
- TeX Live is a distribution provided by most TeX user groups which supports many Unix systems, MacOSX, and 32-bit Windows.
- MacTeX, TeX Live with additions and easy installation for MacOSX.
- MiKTeX, an independent distribution for Windows with a flexible package manager.
- proTeXt, MiKTeX with additions and a thorough installation guide for Windows.
- KerTeX, from Thierry Laronde, a TeX kernel system.
- Knoppix, a live GNU/Linux system on a bootable CD that includes TeX. Portable LaTeX (Slackware-based) is similar, specifically constructed for writing (La)TeX documents.
- Wallstone Creativity Desktop, a large free software collection for dealing with documents, photos, video, project planning, and more; includes (La)TeX.
