Terraforming, also called earth-shaping or planetary modification, is the process of changing the environment of planets, moons, and other celestial bodies other than Earth to resemble Earth's atmosphere, temperature, and ecosystems so that humans can live there.
It deliberately changes a planet's environment based on experience on Earth, but whether an Earth-like biosphere can be created on another planet has not yet been confirmed.
Mars is considered a leading candidate for terraforming. Several possibilities for changing the Martian climate with human science and technology have been proposed, but for now the economic resources needed to terraform Mars are lacking. In addition to the long time terraforming would take, its practicality, and the methods of terraforming, there are also ethical, political, and economic controversies.
