Telnet (TELNET) is a network protocol used for Internet or local area network connections. It was developed in 1969 starting with RFC15 and, as one of the first Internet standards, was standardized as IETF STD 8.
The term telnet also refers to software that implements the client part of the protocol. Telnet clients have been available on most Unix systems for many years and are available on virtually every platform. Most network equipment and operating systems with a TCP/IP stack support some kind of Telnet service server for remote configuration (Windows NT-based). Because of Telnet's security problems, its usage has declined, and it has been replaced by SSH for remote control.
