Tauri vs Electron

Item-by-item comparison using a cross-platform 2FA app called Authme

  • Bundle: Tauri, which uses the OS webview, is much smaller. 2.5MB vs. 85MB
  • Startup time: Tauri ~2s vs. Electron ~4s
  • RAM usage:
    • On Windows, Tauri 80MB vs. Electron 120MB, not a big difference
    • On Linux, Tauri 80MB, while Electron spins up a lot of something and uses over 500MB, a big difference
  • AppBackend: Electron uses the Node.js runtime so JavaScript coding is enough, but Tauri requires Rust coding
    • The Tauri roadmap reportedly plans support for Python, C++, and Deno as well
  • Rendering: Electron uses Chromium on Win/Mac/Linux, while Tauri uses Win (Edge WebView2)/Linux (WebKitGTK)/Mac (WebKit)
    • Since there can be differences between browsers, Tauri sometimes requires polyfills
  • Security: Tauri has a great many built-in security features, so it is secure by default
  • Auto update:
    • Simpler on the Tauri side. It has a built-in Updater (with the drawback that you have to run your own update server)
    • Electron commonly uses electron-updater. Its advantage is the convenience of pulling binaries directly from GitHub releases
  • Developer experience:
    • With Tauri, just install the CLI and everything is ready to use (hot reloading, bundling, app creation, etc.)
    • Electron gives you only the framework itself, without any of that. You have to handle hot reloading/bundling yourself
    • Tauri's biggest advantage is that it is compatible with every web framework

Conclusion

  • Chose Tauri
  • It still falls short in places, but the Tauri team will catch up with Electron within a few years
  • Especially looking forward to being able to use Deno as the backend, easier auto updates, and iOS/Android support
