TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is an image storage format jointly developed by Aldus and Microsoft. Its defining feature is the flexibility that lets users adapt it to their needs. It was developed in the 1980s so that scanner manufacturers could use a common file format. As computers and scanners steadily improved, the TIFF specification evolved to support grayscale and color images.
