Synthesia is a piano keyboard trainer and video game for Microsoft Windows and macOS that lets users play a MIDI keyboard, or use the computer keyboard following on-screen instructions in time with MIDI, much like the style of Keyboardmania or Guitar Hero. In addition, Synthesia can connect to MIDI keyboards with lighted keys or place a virtual automatic piano on screen, making it easy for beginners to learn the piano. It was originally named Piano Hero because of its gameplay similarity to Guitar Hero. It was changed to its current name after Activision (the rights holder of Guitar Hero) sent a cease-and-desist order to the program's developer, Nicholas Piegdon.
