Subversion is a free software version control system. It is also abbreviated as SVN, after the command used in its command-line interface. It was developed by CollabNet starting in 2000 to replace CVS, which had limitations. It is now a top-level Apache project developed together with a worldwide developer community.
Subversion follows a server-client model. The server can be placed on the computer you work on, or on a separate computer connected to the network. The Subversion server and client communicate using the http, https, svn, and svn+ssh protocols.
