Subtitles are text renderings of the dialogue in television programs and films, usually displayed at the very bottom of the screen. They may be a translation of dialogue in a foreign language, or a written rendering of dialogue in the same language. They may or may not include additional information designed to help viewers with hearing impairments follow the dialogue. Teletext subtitles on television are not displayed unless the viewer selects the appropriate teletext page (p888) or makes a separate request from a menu, and they sometimes carry additional sound descriptions for viewers with hearing impairments. The subtitle language of teletext follows the original audio, except in multilingual countries where broadcasters must add subtitles in several languages to teletext pages.
Occasionally, especially at places such as film festivals, subtitles can be shown in a separate window below the screen, so that the film producer does not have to ship a version of the video with subtitles inserted separately for the screening. In North America, television subtitles for people with hearing impairments are called closed captions.
