Among the data formats offered by the KOSIS sharing service, SDMX is a kind of XML; think of it as XML specialized for statistics.
SDMX stands for Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange. It standardizes statistical data of various forms on an XML basis to support efficient exchange and sharing between statistics-producing organizations (agencies). The SDMX standard is sponsored by international organizations: the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the European Central Bank, the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UN Statistics Division, and the World Bank. The current Version 2.1 was certified as international standard ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 17369 in January 2013, and its use is steadily expanding, from national statistics offices to many international organizations.
