The Spring Framework is an open-source application framework for the Java platform, also simply called Spring. It provides a variety of services for developing dynamic web sites. It is used as the underlying technology of the eGovernment Standard Framework, which is recommended for developing web services for public institutions in the Republic of Korea.
Modules
The main modules used in Spring are as follows.
- Inversion of control container
- The inversion of control (IoC) container is Spring's most important, core feature. It uses Java reflection to manage the life cycle of objects, and wires up the dependencies between layers and services through dependency injection. These features are mostly configured and carried out through XML files responsible for configuration.
- Aspect-oriented programming framework
- Spring supports aspect-oriented programming (AOP), which lets you develop separately the functions that are used in common in many places but are unrelated to the core business logic, such as logging, security, and transactions, and combine them at run time. It can also use AspectJ, a powerful and widely used existing aspect-oriented programming framework, internally, and it also supports Spring's own approach of combining them at run time (Runtime).
- Data access framework
- Spring provides support for several popular libraries for connecting to databases and storing and reading data, namely JDBC, iBatis (MyBatis), Hibernate, and others, making database programming easy.
- Transaction management framework
- Spring supports abstracted transaction management, and supports both a declarative approach using XML configuration files and a programmatic approach.
- Model-view-controller pattern
- Spring uses the model-view-controller (MVC) pattern called Spring MVC, which is almost the standard approach in web programming. DispatcherServlet plays the Contoller role, distributing requests to the appropriate services; each service processes them and produces a result, and the result can be displayed on screen through View services of various formats.
- Batch framework
- Spring provides a batch framework that supports batch processing (Batch Processing), used to run at specific times or to process large volumes of data. By default, Spring Batch runs on Quartz.
