A specification language, or specification description language, is a formal language used in computer science. Unlike programming languages, which are formal languages used to implement a system and that can be executed directly, specification languages are used during system analysis, requirements analysis, and system design. Specification languages are generally not executed directly. They describe a system at a much higher level than programming languages. In fact, if a requirements specification is cluttered with unnecessary detail, this can be recognized as an error. The reason is that such details describe "what" rather than "how".
