Sound, or a 'sound wave', is a longitudinal wave transmitted through the vibration of a medium such as air or water. A typical example is the motion of a medium that stimulates the human auditory organs and is interpreted by the brain.
The sounds that constantly reach our ears are waves traveling through the air. Sound conveys many kinds of information to us. Although it is a wave invisible to the eye, in the case of sound waves the various properties of waves can be perceived as changes in the sound we hear.
Humans can hear sound because the air vibrates. That is, because it has a frequency. The human audible frequency range is about 20~20480 Hz (20.48 KHz), and the maximum audible frequency decreases with age. In engineering, the audible frequency bandwidth is 300~3400 Hz.
In physics, sound, i.e. a sound wave, is a type of longitudinal wave, a wave in which the direction of vibration of the medium matches the direction of the wave. Meanwhile, a sound wave gets its wave by compressing or expanding the air. It is the basis of the speed of sound.
