A software synthesizer, or softsynth, is a plugin or computer program that generates digital audio, usually for music. Computer software that can create sounds or music is not new, but advances in processing speed now allow software synthesizers to perform the same tasks that once required dedicated hardware. Software synthesizers are generally cheaper and more portable than dedicated hardware, and interact more easily with other music software such as sequencers.
