Software as a Service

lastmod 2025-11-12created 2015-03-1222 edits

SaaS (Software as a Service), also called "on-demand software", is a software delivery model in which software and its associated data are hosted centrally and users access them through a client such as a web browser.

It is an extension of the earlier ASP concept and can be seen as next-generation ASP. SaaS and ASP differ as follows.

  • SaaS is business-oriented from an e-commerce perspective, whereas ASP is based on the Coasian Economics of IT outsourcing.
  • SaaS focuses on providing IT services to an unspecified mass of customers, so it emphasizes scalability and customization to customer requirements.
  • Unlike ASP, which began with Kodak's IT outsourcing in 1989, SaaS focuses on creating customer value and meeting customer needs.

Recent success stories include CRMKorea, Salesforce.com, and RightNow in customer relationship management (CRM), as well as accounting, a field where this has long been done. The shift from buying software to renting it is spreading steadily; not only small and medium-sized businesses but also large enterprises are actively considering adoption, and it is widely used.

About SaaS

What is SaaS (software as a service)? Business innovation delivered from the cloud

Software as a service (SaaS), or cloud application services, is the most comprehensive form of cloud computing service: all applications are managed by the provider and delivered through a web browser.

The provider handles software updates, bug fixes, and other general software maintenance, and users connect to the application through a dashboard or API. There is no need to install the software on individual machines, and group access to the program is smoother and more reliable.

If you have an email account with a web-based service such as Outlook or Gmail, you are already familiar with SaaS, since you can log in to your account and receive email from any computer, anywhere.

SaaS is a very useful option for small businesses that lack the staff or bandwidth to handle software installation and updates, and that have applications needing little optimization or used only periodically.

SaaS can save time and maintenance, but it comes at a cost in control, security, and performance, so it is important to choose a trustworthy provider.

Dropbox, Salesforce, Google Apps, and Red Hat Insights are some examples of SaaS.
