Computer software (or simply software) refers to one or more computer programs with a specific purpose stored on a storage device. Program software performs the functions it was implemented to perform by giving instructions directly to computer hardware or by providing input to other software.

The term "software" was first used by John W. Tukey in 1957. In everyday use, the term is often used to mean application software. In computer science and computer engineering, "computer software" refers to all information processed by computer systems, programs, and data. Computer software is the opposite of computer hardware, which is the physical structure on which software runs and is stored.
