Software defined networking (SDN) is an approach in which a network's traffic forwarding behavior is controlled and managed by a software-based controller through an open API (OpenFlow). The control plane, which determines traffic paths, is separated from the data plane, which performs traffic forwarding. As a result, the network can be managed according to requirements without being tied to its detailed configuration.
