A social network service (Social Networking Service, SNS, or Social Media) refers to an online platform that creates and strengthens social relationships through free communication and information sharing between users and through expanding personal networks. The most important aspect of SNS is that social networks are created, maintained, strengthened, and expanded through the service. It can be all the more meaningful when information is shared and circulated through these networks.
Most SNS today are web-based services, and beyond the web they also provide ways for users to contact each other via email or instant messengers. SNS is often misused as the same concept as social media, but by category it is more appropriate to see it as one type of social media, along with blogs, wikis, UCC, microblogs, and so on. (However, the word popularized in the English-speaking world is not SNS but social media. It refers collectively to online services based on online and offline personal networks.)
Recently, along with the growing number of smartphone users and the expansion of wireless Internet services, the number of SNS users has also been surging. The number of users of Facebook and Twitter, which lead the SNS market in South Korea, already exceeded 1.8 billion in 2018, and this continued growth trend is expected not to stop for the time being.
SNS is gaining ever more value for marketing, in that it can identify and manage, through databases, service users who are broad in number yet can be classified into groups with particular tendencies. Thanks to this advantage, companies can run customized marketing that reaches target groups efficiently at low cost. SNS companies are also building strong revenue models by selling ad space on SNS pages and selling social games and items, so the SNS market is expected to keep growing.
Meanwhile, in South Korea, the language refinement program Urimal Dadeumgi replaced "social network service" with the native Korean terms 누리 소통망 (nuri sotongmang, "world communication network"), 누리 소통망 서비스 (nuri sotongmang service), 사회 관계망 (sahoe gwangyemang, "social relationship network"), and 사회 관계망 서비스 (sahoe gwangyemang service). Some South Korean media outlets call it 사회관계망서비스 (sahoegwangyemang service).
