Social media refers to open online platforms that, with the arrival of the Web 2.0 era summed up by the values of openness, participation, and sharing, allow individuals to share their thoughts, opinions, experiences, and information with one another on the foundation of social networks, and to create or expand relationships with others. Because it grows like a kind of organism, the usual mechanisms of consumption and production do not apply, and it is characterized by users voluntarily participating, sharing information, and creating content by making use of its two-way nature. In other words, whereas traditional media such as TV, newspapers, magazines, and radio have the communication properties of a one-way, one-to-many relationship, social media is based on a two-way, many-to-many relationship in which various forms of content are created and shared by various users, so it can be seen as having the characteristics of one-person media and one-person communities. Social media turns the one-way monologue of broadcast media into the dialogue of social media, and by enabling its users to be content producers as well as content consumers, it promotes the democratization and opening of information.

It is divided into five types: blogs, social network services (SNS), wikis, UCC, and microblogs. In general, web-based platforms that provide services connecting people with people, or people with information, and letting them interact can be included in the category of social media. Thus, YouTube, online games, and KakaoTalk Open Chat can also be social media.
