A smartwatch is a portable embedded-system watch equipped with features beyond those of an ordinary watch, and it almost always takes the form of a wristwatch. It is often compared to a PDA in terms of functionality. Early models had basic calculator, translator, and gaming features, while today's smartwatches are expected to serve effectively as wearable computers. Many smartwatches run mobile apps (applications), and some run on a mobile operating system. Some also have mobile media player features such as FM radio and audio or video file playback, which can be listened to through a headset via Bluetooth.

Smartwatches can be broadly divided into companion (tethered) smartwatches and standalone smartwatches. Both commonly feature a camera, accelerometer, thermometer, altimeter, barometer, compass, chronograph, calculator, mobile phone, touchscreen, GPS, map display, information graphics, computer speaker, calendar, wristwatch, SD card storage recognition, and a rechargeable battery. Companion smartwatches have the advantage of easy integration and sync with a smartphone, but the disadvantage that they must be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth to be used properly. Standalone smartwatches, unlike companion ones, have the advantage of their own communication features for independent use, such as a wireless headset, microphone, voice/data modem, and SIM card slot, but the disadvantage that syncing with a smartphone is impossible or difficult.

There are also 'sport watches', which have features such as GPS, waterproofing, and calorie counting, and are used mainly for training, diving, and outdoor sports.

Like any computer, they are based on data processing, storage, and input/output, and collect information through internal and external sensors. They also search and control data through other devices or computers. They also support wireless communication such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS.

As with watches that have mobile phone or Wi-Fi features, a "wrist computer" can also act as the input/output interface for a remote system.
