A smart contract is a contract concluded on a blockchain basis.
It was first introduced in Ethereum. It has since been applied to cryptocurrencies such as ADA, NEO, Qtum, and EOS.
In Ethereum, smart contracts are written using a Java-based programming language called Solidity. Early Ethereum was built in JavaScript, and a language called Solidity was created by adding some commands to JavaScript to make smart contracts easier. The name is different, but its basis is the same as JavaScript.
Similar to Java's JVM, each Ethereum node emulates a kind of virtual machine called the EVM to run smart contract code and integrates the results with the Ethereum network.
Because the Solidity language is Java-based, most developers could adapt to it easily, but for the scalability of smart contract development, the Ethereum Foundation is developing various EVM compilers or Wrappers so that smart contracts can be developed in other programming languages such as Python, Java, and C.
