In the field of computer graphics, a shader is a set of software instructions mainly used to compute rendering effects on graphics hardware. Shaders are used to program the programmable rendering pipeline of the graphics processing unit (GPU).

Shading in 3D computer graphics refers to a technique that varies the illuminance of an object's surface during rendering according to the distance and angle of light. Because the brightness of each polygon changes according to the angle between its surface and the light, objects can be represented more realistically and become easier to distinguish by eye.
