Service-oriented architecture (Service Oriented Architecture, abbreviated SOA, pronounced "S-O-A" or "soa") is a concept for building large-scale computer systems: a methodology that treats software functions corresponding to business tasks as services and builds the whole system by integrating those services over a network. It has drawn attention in the IT industry since 2004 in response to the demand to reflect changes in business processes quickly in systems.

- In his book SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture, Thomas Erl defines service-oriented architecture (SOA) as follows. Contemporary SOA is implemented as web services: a composable architecture made up of open, agile, extensible, federated, and autonomous elements, with quality of service, multiple vendors, interoperability, service discovery, and potentially reusable services. SOA abstracts business logic and technology, encouraging loose coupling between these domains. As an evolution of past platforms, SOA retains the characteristics of traditional architectures intact, supports SOE with clear principles, and promotes service orientation. SOA ideally standardizes the enterprise environment, but only a migration based on careful advance planning and support for technologies that are still evolving can achieve this goal.
- The book "Enterprise SOA (Dirk Krafzg, Karl Banke, Dirk Slama)" defines service-oriented architecture as "a software architecture based on the key concepts of an application frontend, services, a service repository, and a service bus. A service consists of a contract, one or more interfaces, and an implementation of them."
- Dr. Hao He, active in the W3C Web Service Architecture Working Group, defines it as "an architecture whose goal is loose coupling between interacting systems (Service Oriented Architecture is an architectural style whose goal is to achieve loose coupling among interacting software agents)."
